How to map a sprinkler system? ›

The most common cause of a stuck sprinkler head is dirt and debris. If dirt, rocks, leaves, or grass gets caught between a sprinkler body and the sprinkler riser, it can clog up the works and stop the riser from sliding back into the body. Resulting in a sprinkler head that won't go down.

Check the circuit breaker or fuse. If it is blown, it's most likely caused by a field wiring short. The electromechanical controller will stop on the sta- tion that caused the problem. Reset the controller in rest position, replace the fuse or circuit breaker.

Most automatic sprinkler systems require between 40 to 60 PSI to operate properly. Because water pressure fluctuates throughout the day, it's best to make sure other faucets in your house are off and that you record your water pressure at around the time you will likely be using your irrigation system.

This is done by considering each sprinkler as a geometric shape. Each sprinkler head is rated with an ARC and Radius, this provides you with the shape you will use to determine coverage. The geometric shapes will all be based around a circle, while your layout will be based around a square or triangle pattern.

Or, if you prefer, simply leave the irrigation design up to an installation professional, so you can be guaranteed head-to-head coverage. Typically, though, a sprinkler system zone will boast 5 to 6 rotor heads and/or 8 to 10 spray heads.

Ensure your water supply is turned on all the way and that any valves along the line are in good working order and fully open. Does your sprinkler system include a rain sensor? Inspect the sensor for debris or damage. The sensor may need to be cleaned, restarted, repaired, or replaced.

Sprinkler heads are rated at a specific GPM flow rate at a specific pressure. We recommend that you use 40 psi when designing your system. Example: if your sprinkler heads use 2.5 gpm @ 40 psi, then a ¾” service (20 gpm) could operate approximately 8 heads at one time.

For residential and small business applications manufacturers recommend 30psi at the head for sprays and 45 psi at the head for rotors. Larger heads will require higher pressure.

To obtain proper air volume, you will need to rent or buy a compressor capable of providing 20 to 25 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air volume. Air pressure must not exceed 50 pounds per square inch (psi) during the blow out procedure.

Without digging, it is possible to find sprinkler lines by getting a design map from the company that installed the system. If this is not possible, one could go to the valve box and follow a line back to each of the head sprinklers in a circuit. Or one could utilize an electronic water-detection device.

Use a wire locator which is also known as a wire tracer device. In some tool rental places, especially in locations that provide to professional contractors, have wire tracers they rent. This device is used to follow the path of the wires to the valve, starting at the controller/timer.

With simple math, you can determine how many heads in each zone and then take the total number of sprinklers you need, and divide that by your head/zone number and that will tell you how many zones you need.
