Oakley Split Shot Sunglasses Review

Frame and Design

The Split Shot design definitely has fishermen in mind. While they can certainly be worn every day as well, these Oakley sunglasses are ideal for being on the water.

Featuring a full-frame design with a big, rectangular wrap, the Split Shot has great peripheral coverage and vision. Plus the ear stems are wide at the front providing even more coverage. These stems taper back to a comfortable narrow end over the ears.

Overall the design works but leaves us wanting more from Oakley. The Split Shot looks a bit generic compared to some of the classic sunglasses we love like the Juliets or C Wires.

While the pair works well for fishing, we hope to see more disruptive designs on future frames!

The frame itself is made of O Matter material. Making these sunglasses strong, flexible, and durable, as well as lightweight.

You’ll also find an Unobtainium nosepad for enhanced grip. But the real grip comes from the Split Shot leash. Keep reading for our complete breakdown of this new feature.

Leash Attachment

The integrated Split Shot leash is the biggest innovation on this frame. This is Oakley’s take on Croakies, which are already popular in fishing and boating. But this leash improves on the traditional friction fit design.

Instead, the Split Shot leash connects right into the ear stems themselves. The leash fits directly into the end of each earstem, which has an opening that snaps shut for a tight fit.

Overall, the leash is easy to put on and take off. And when it’s off, you can’t tell the opening is even there. It’s a pretty neat feature. And at 20 inches long, the coated woven steel leash will keep your Split Shots from falling into the water.

Our Oakley Split Shot review wouldn’t be complete without talking about the Prizm lens options.

The Split Shot is available with a variety of Prizm and Prizm Polarized lenses. But our favorites are either the Deep Water Prizm Polarized or Shallow Water Prizm Polarized lenses. (Also, be sure to check out our guide to whether Polarized lenses are actually good for fishing.)

These water-specific lenses give an enhanced view of what’s happening beneath the surface. Shallow Water lenses are mainly for freshwater streams and lakes, Deep Water lenses are generally for offshore.
